Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition in English. Penguin Modern European Poets series - Penguin Catalogue No. D95. ***First printing of the first UK edition in English, published as a paperback original (PBO) in January 1967. Translated from the Czech by Ian Milner and George Theiner. Cover d…esign by Harriet Walters. ***Very good in colour illustrated thin card covers, with the printed price of 3/6 on the front cover. The covers have some light edge wear and rubbing commensurate with age and handling, and there is a bump to the bottom outer corner of the page block which affects the interior pages. There is also a crease to the top corner of the back cover which affects the last few pages (please see scans). Spine unfaded and clean with no reading creases. Spine tight. Covers bright. Internally also very good with no ownership details or annotations. Paper stock lightly tanned but pages clean. No creases or tears apart from to the corners already mentioned. ***180mm x 108mm. 99 pages plus six pages of adverts for Penguin Modern European Poets at the back of the book. ***'Miroslav Holub would like people to read poems as naturally as they read the papers, or go to a football match. Not to consider it as anything more difficult, or effeminate, or praise-worthy." Holub, and internationally distinguished scientist, is Czechoslovakia's most lively and experimental poet. The scientist in him is always creatively present in his poems, lurking behind his restless experiments in free verse and his constant probing below the obvious surface of things. Above all he shows an unwavering sense of the realities of life.' ***'Penguin Modern European Poets is designed to present, in verse translations, the work of significant European poets of this century for readers unfamiliar with the original languages. The series already includes Yevtushenko, Rilke, Apollinaire, Prévert, Quasimodo, and four Greek poets.' (Quotes taken from the back cover) ***A first printing of the true first edition, published as a paperback original, in the original card covers, in very good condition, albeit with the bump to the page block mentioned above. One of the scarcer titles in the series. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Harriet Walters (Cover design) (illustrator).
