Helsinki: Otava Publishing Co., 1974. First English-language edition. Printed in Finland (Keuruu). An authoritative and detailed survey of Finland's political evo…lution from the early 19th century through the postwar period, tracing its transformation from an autonomous grand duchy under Russia to an independent modern state. Puntila, a University of Helsinki political historian, interprets key constitutional crises, ideological movements, and the challenges of neutrality during the Cold War. Illustrated with maps showing Finland's changing borders from 1323 to 1944. Condition: Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Blue cloth boards sharp, clean, and square with bright black-and-red spine titles; contents fresh and unmarked aside from a discreet personal label on the front pastedown. Binding tight, no remainder or library marks. Dust jacket unclipped, showing only light surface wear, small closed tear at crown, and mild toning to upper edges. A bright, well-preserved example. Edition details: English translation of Suomen poliittinen historia 1809-1966, first published by Otava in 1966; this edition printed in 1974 at Otavan Painolaitokset, Keuruu. Jacket design credited to Seija Kirkkala. Lauri Arvi Puntila (1907-1988) was a Finnish historian, author, and professor of political history at the University of Helsinki (1952-1971). A leading interpreter of Finland's 19th- and 20th-century governance, his work combined political analysis with social and diplomatic history. Puntila also served in Finland's Parliament and was instrumental in shaping postwar historical discourse on Finland's neutrality and international position between East and West. Jacket design credited to Seija Kirkkala (illustrator).
