The Plantagenet ancestry of this son of the Duke of Beaufort explains much of his career as Governor and Commander in-Chief at the Cape of… Good Hope from 1814-26. He was autocratic, passionate, quick tempered, fond of sport and hunting; he was also hard working, firm, not afraid to be unpopular, full of energy and zeal. Brought up in the splendours of Badminton, his ancestral home, he became one of the brilliant company surrounding the Prince of Wales. He early showed more daring than financial prudence when he eloped with a bride who brought him great happiness but small fortune. After rapid advancement in public life and the Army, he sailed for the Cape, that 'grave of great reputations', to become Governor, and the centre of controversy. Looked upon as the embodiment of High Toryism by Whigs and Radicals in England, and as an oppressive autocrat by many at the Cape, he was bitterly attacked, becoming involved in plots, protests, libels, espionage, and conflicts over the freedom of the press. From his vigorous and heartfelt letters to a Commissioner of Enquiry, which have become available only in recent years, Lord Charles emerges perhaps for the first time as an understandable human being, caught up in complex situations many of which have not been resolved even today. This correspondence and the results of much original research in England and South Africa have enabled the first biographer of Somerset to throw a new light on his governorship during an important formative period of British rule at the Cape. The breadth of canvas covered is indicated by the variety of the other characters, famous and infamous, who appear, sometimes briefly, sometimes not: Wellington and Napoleon, Lord Raglan, later of the Crimea, who was Somerset's younger brother, Creevey the Whig diarist and Henry Brougham, the literary courtesan Harriette Wilson and the hoaxer Theodore Hook; and in South Africa, the pioneer journalists Pringle and Fairbairn, a 'terrible priest' and an escaped convict from Botany Bay masquerading as an attorney and self-appointed people's champion, and of course Dr James Barry, Lord Charles's protégée, who became Inspector General of Hospitals in the British Army, and at death was found to have been a woman.
