Condition: Good+. 2nd Ed.thus, (1st thus 1869, 1st-1829). xxiv+453; vi+403; eminent historian of science R.M.Young's dated sig.verso fr.free endpapers, 12cm. square decorative engr.ex-lib.labels of Milly Erdmann on fr.pastedowns, occ.light foxing, end-gutter vol.1 badly cracked, others sound bar sl.paper splitting, bottom of textblock fore-edges there is a brown water-stain 'tidemark' but this had minimal internal effects, only very marginal browning to some pp. and similarly minor discol.to pigment on lower corners of external sides of free endpapers, covers also hardly visibly affected except with very close scrutiny, no internal text-marking. Red cloth covers clean but spines & fr.Vol.2 somewhat faded, sp.ends sl.rubbed. Despite faults an attractive copy of this important work.

Grey Cloth. Condition: Fine-. Rep.of 1878 version of 1869 2nd ed. The 1st ed. appeared in 1829, the 2nd in 1869, then reissued with the Bain etc. material in 1878. Vol.1: xxiv+453; Vol.2: vi+403; small green Roger Smith stamps to front endpapers, otherwise virtually flawless inside and out. A facsimile reprint with no additional reprint.
