Bulgakov's first full-length novel - set in Kiev in 1918-1919 during the civil war about the Turbin family, belonging to the monarchist intelligentsia, and anti-Bolshevik White officers. It was criticised for not featuring a communist hero - the journal in which it was first appeared in serial form was closed down before it could be fully published.
