Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, known as Balthus (1908-2001), was born in Paris to Polish expatriate parents. He was raised in an exceptionally artistic milieu, with visitors to his household including Rilke (who became his mother's lover), Andrà Gide, Jean Cocteau, Maurice Denis and Pierre Bonnard. Balthus was one of the few living artists to be represented in the Louvre, when his painting The Children (1937) was acquired from the private collection of Pablo Picasso. .

Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Throughout his career, Balthus rejected the usual conventions of the art world. He insisted that his paintings should be seen and not read about, and he resisted attempts to build a biographical profile. Nevertheless, towards the end of his life he took part in a series of dialogues with the neurobiologist Semir Zeki, conducted at his chalet at Rossinière, Switzerland and at the Palazzo Farnese (French Embassy) in Rome. They were published in 1995 under the title La Qûete de l'essentiel, and in them he gives some of his views on art, painting and some other painters.

Dietmar Elger, geboren 1958 in Hannover; 1978 - 1984 Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Geschichte und Literaturwissenschaften an der Universität Hamburg, 1984 Promotion mit einer Arbeit über den "Merzbau" von Kurt Schwitters. 1984 - 1985 Sekretär im Atelier von Gerhard Richter. 1985 - 1988 Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund, seit 1989 Kustos für Malerei und Skulptur am Sprengel Museum Hannover, Organisation zahlreicher Ausstellungen zur modernen und zeitgenössischen Kunst. 1998 Kurator der Ausstellung "Gerhard Richter. Landschaften". Dieser Band ist eine phänomenal passende Würdigung der Bilder und Serien von Gerhard Richter. Dieser Begleitband zur Ausstellung in der Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel vom 18.5. bis 07.09.2014 präsentiert nicht nur die einzelnen Werke von Gerhard Richter, sondern enthält neben der Einführung von Hans Ulrich Obrist und den begleitenden Essays von Dieter Schwarz und Georges Didi-Huberman auch ein neunseitiges Interview, welches Hans Ulrich Obrist mit dem in Dresden 1932 geborenen Künstler geführt hat. Eine Biographie, die sich sehr stark an dem künstlerischen und weniger an dem persönlichen Lebensweg Richters orientiert, rundet den Band mit einem Katalog der ausgestellten Werke ab. Diese Monografie zeigt in einer ausgezeichneten Far- und Druckqualität eine Vielzahl von als Serien, Zyklen und Räume realisierten Werken aus den verschiedenen Schaffensperioden, welche insgesamt über 60 Jahre betragen. Seine Vielfalt an Themen und Stilen wird in diesem Band noch einmal besonders deutlich; denn es werden figurative Arbeiten wie Landschaften, Stillleben und Porträts gezeigt, aber auch abstrakte Gemälde. Die Aufnahmen aus Richters Atelier passen sehr gut in diesen Lebenswerkband hinein. Man wird erstaunt sein, wie großzügig die Werke in diesem Druckband platziert sind, so dass diese ausreichend Raum zur Wirkung haben.
