Studio medico dermatologico relativo alla pellagra con minuziosa descrizione della sintomatologia del pellagroso e rassegna delle principali posizioni espresse da medici italiani e internazionali sulle cause della malattia: 'I disordini del sistema nervoso ponno dividersi in tre gruppi, in quelli che si riferiscono alle funzioni cerebrali propriamente dette, a quelle dei sensi speciali, alla sensibilita' ed ai movimenti generali. Notai gia' come fenomeni della pellagra incipiente la perdita delle forze, la lassezza, la tristezza, lo sbalordimento, la svogliatezza, il senso di peso piu' o meno doloroso alla testa, con carattere vertiginoso [.] La pelle, nelle regioni che furon sede degli eritemi ripetuti, diviene spessa, nerastra, friabile; le solcature articolari divengono piu' profonde; il colore si fa giallognolo [.] I fenomeni morbosi dell'apparecchio digestivo [.] divengono piu' intensi e costanti'. La malattia in stato di avanzamento arriva a causare follia, fenomeni convulsivi, paralisi. Per Michelacci, che utilizza un tono di disprezzo nei confronti del pellagroso, definito 'balordone', la malattia e' dovuta alla miseria piu' che ad una intossicazione alimentare: 'li attacchi di pellagra possono verificarsi nella miseria [.] ma non rinnovandosi questa cagione, la pellagra non e' che un episodio della vita del miserabile'. E' al contrario la 'miseria patologica' ad infierire sulle condizioni del 'miserabile proletario' e a daterminare l'evolversi progressivo della malattia fino alla morte. ITA.…
