This book is the diary he kept during the first year of his sentence, served in a coal mine. His collected short stories, The Problems of Liuetenant Knap, were published by the Hogarth Press, and translated into many languages. After the war he returned to Czechoslovakia and published several novels and his war diary, Fire Braves Fire, before his arrest for alleged espionage in 1951. Since his release in 1954,he has published Black and White New York, the novel Probable Face, a volume of short stories, and two books on the Art Nouveau.''
