cat40a (illustrator). Green cloth, covers stamped in blind, spine ruled & lettered in gilt. Floral end papers. A bright, fine copy, unusual in such nice condition. A couple of small pencil notes within, indicate the authorship of a particular poem or chapter. Inscribed from C.F. Newcomb on the first blank leaf, dated 1892. Very biblical and proverbial in tone, this novel advances the idea that the Mound Builders were descended from tribes which were originally from Egypt and Assyria, and that they built great cities in North America around 2000 B.C. A copy in the Huntington Library bears an inscription which suggests that the author was J.M. Hanks; it is likely that Cyrus F. Newcomb was the publisher.
