Den geschichtlichen Hintergrund und zugleich dramatischen Höhepunkt der Handlung gibt ein Aufstand, der im Juni 1780 in London ausbrach. Die Urheber und Drahtzieher, die im Hintergrund bleiben und straffrei ausgehen, sind 'ehrenwerte' Gentleman . "Barnaby Rudge" ist der zweiteselbstständige Roman, den Dickens unter dem Obertitel "Meister Humphreys Wanduhr" veröffentlichte. Mit dem ersten Roman "Der Raritätenladen" ist er durch die Rahmenhandlung verbunden. Beide Werke erschienen in Heften 1840 und 1841 in London."
