Peter in Glarus' - Das bereits beträchtlich erweiterte Kurhaus Gurnigelbad bestand um 1858/60 aus gut 6 zusammenhängenden Bauten sowie 4 separaten Gebäuden. C. Peters Ansicht entspricht ziemlich genau der Fotografie des Thuner Fotografen Jean Moeglé (1853-1938) um 1880, nur zeigte letztere hinter dieser Front nochmals bedeutende Erweiterungen zum feudalen Grandhotel (charmantes Detail: sowohl in der Litho von 1858/60 als auch in Moeglés Aufnahme von 1880 verlässt auf der Zufahrtsstrasse eine Pferdekutsche, ein 2- bzw. 5-Spänner die Hotelanlage; vgl. ba.e-pics.ethz ch, die Aufnahme Moeglés als einzige vor 1900) - Eine der frühesten umfassenderen monographischen Publikationen zu dem im ausgehenden 16. Jahrhundert mit einem Badgebäude aufgenommenen Badebetrieb. Als wohl erste bedeutende Darstellung dürfte die 1820/21 in zwei Heften erschienene 'Beschreibung des Gurnigel-Bades im Canton Bern' von Johann Ludwig Meyer einzustufen sein (13. u. 14 Neujahrsblatt von der neuerrichteten Gesellschaft zum schwarzen Garten). - In der Zeit, als Meyer-Ahrens sich mit diesem Bad befasste, stand die Anlage noch im (kurzzeitigen) Besitz von Friedrich Blumer aus Glarus. "Im Jahre 1859 ging die Anstalt in den Besitz des Herrn Friedr. Blumer von Schwanden im Kanton Glarus über, der sie jedoch verpachten wird." (Meyer Ahrens, SD p. 4, bzw. Bd. 1, p. 197). - Blumer hatte den Betrieb vom Basler Hotelier Johann Jakob Kromer übernommen, der die Anlage 1839 erworben und danach in Etappen bis auf 100 Zimmer erweitert hatte. Bereits zwei Jahre später, 1861, ging das Gurnigelbad von Blumer an die Hotelierdynastie Hauser aus Wädenswil. "Dieser Familie gehörten mindestens acht weitere Häuser von Rang, darunter das Hotel Giessbach, das Weissenburgbad, die Hotels Schweizerhof in Bern und Luzern sowie ein Grand Hotel in La Spezia. Unter der Leitung des Direktors Johann Jakob Hauser (1828-1891) nahm der Kurbetrieb einen bedeutenden Aufschwung und wurde zum Grandhotel. [.] Dieses erste Grand Hotel [.] wurde in der Nacht vom 30. April auf den 1. Mai 1902 durch Brand vollständig zerstört. Am 15. Er betrieb Forschungen über Syphilis, Pest, Kretinismus und den sogenannten Alpenstich. Meyer-Ahrens gilt als bedeutendster Schweizer Medizinhistoriker des 19.
