The extensive manuscript caption describes the bridge as having been constructed by the Dutch to facilitate the passage of troops into the Bommelerwaard ("l'isle de Bommel"). The artist locates the scene near "Boucauve", on an estate belonging to the Prince de Montmorency. The watercolour belongs to a chronological series of eyewitness drawings recording the artist's travels through the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Germany in the 1790s.Numbered "32" on the verso, with remnants of blue paper on the verso, suggesting the work was taken from an album. Otherwise in very good condition.…
