Titre-frontispice hors-texte lithographié en noir, bistre et doré… (daté de 1844) et 30 lithographies à deux teintes dont un plan aquarellé, texte encadré d'un double filet noir, (2) ff., 58 pp. Rousseurs éparses. Edition originale rare de ce bel album publié en souscription de 1844 à 1847, et tiré à environ 150 exemplaires. Exemplaire truffé du prospectus de souscription ("La Mayenne pittoresque, recueil de gravures et lithographies, accompagné de texte"). Jean-Baptiste Messager (Laval, 1812-1885) est le meilleur peintre lavallois de son temps. Il avait été l'élève des peintres Picot et Hubert, et de l'aquarelliste Isabey. Ses planches sur la Mayenne, outre leur aspect ornemental, sont d'une grande précision et constituent une excellente documentation iconographique sur cette région à l'époque romantique. La plupart des planches ont été lithographiées à Laval (par Edouard Morice pour 15 d'entre elles, par Godbert pour 13 d'entre elles). Seules la 17e, la 20e et la 21e ont été réalisées à Paris. On trouve très rarement ce recueil complet de toutes ses planches. Bibliographie de la France (1848), n°218 ; Brunet I, 1348.
