Résumé : Conséquence directe du lamentable armistice franco-germano-italien du 25 juin 1940, Vichy s'était refusé à toute initiative de réorganisation militaire qui aurait pu compromettre sa politique servile de collaborat…ion avec Hitler. Du 8 au 11 novembre 1942, quand les Anglo-Américains débarquèrent au Maroc et en Algérie, Vichy ordonna de s'y opposer par les armes. Le 10 novembre, on admit même, sans aucune réaction, le principe d'une invasion de la "zone libre" par l'armée allemande. Et, le vendredi 27 novembre 1942, les armées de terre et de l'air de l'"Etat français" du maréchal Pétain capitulèrent sans réaction devant le coup de force de la Wehrmacht allemande. Toutes les unités furent dissoutes ; les armements et matériels, canons, avions, véhicules, casernes, dépôts, bases terrestres et aériennes, furent livrés intacts à l'ennemi. Le même jour, la flotte de Haute-Mer se saborda sans combat et sans risques à Toulon. Ainsi la France avait perdu tous moyens d'être reconnue comme une grande puissance. Ce 27 novembre 1942, le Commandant du 30ème Chasseurs, parmi d'autres, constate avec amertume : "C'est un jour de deuil sans précédent dans notre histoire. L'armée française cesse d'exister. sans que seulement nous puissions sauver notre honneur militaire." Ce livre, basé sur les témoignages et documents français de l'époque et, surtout, sur des archives allemandes inconnues jusqu'à nos jours, présente la vérité, les acteurs, les logiques, les ambitions et décisions qui aboutirent à cette honteuse et tragique capitulation.
