Il volume Langobardia, nonostante la veste grafica monumentale, è fonte di sorpresa, sollievo e grande interesse. Sorpresa per l'impostazione del volume, anzitutt…o. Pur seguendo una struttura canonica, secondo lo schema inaugurato dal convegno di Roma del 1974 (i Longobardi nel bacino dell'Elba, in Pannonia, in Italia), la "questione" longobarda finalmente non è più analizzata nella prospettiva dei suoi riflessi politici e culturali da un punto di vista "patriottico", considerando cioè soltanto gli effetti della migrazione sulla società in Italia. Obiettivo del volume è invece di esaminare il processo attraverso il quale si venne aformare l'identità culturale del popolo longobardo: sulla base del presupposto che "la conquista di Alboino rappresentò certo una cesura nella storia d'Italia - con la rottura dell'unità territoriale, l'insediamento di una dominazione politica antagonistica verso l'autorità imperiale di Bisanzio, il rivolgimento del sistema giuridico, amministrativo e fiscale - ma rappresentò anzitutto una cesura nella storia dei Longobardi" (dal "Cenno Introduttivo" di Paolo Cammarosano). Per la prima volta i Longobardi ricevono la dignità di soggetti della storia in quanto popolo con caratteristiche specifiche e mutabili nel tempo, e non come semplice fattore di disordine in un sistema precostituito. All'originalità dei presupposti fa riscontro la nuova rilevanza attribuita ai materiali archeologici, a cui viene concessa la dignità di autentica fonte di informazione. La netta scissione tra le competenze degli storici e quelle degli archeologi trova in questo volume un coraggioso tentativo di superamento. I reperti funerari - di cui si presenta una ricchissima campionatura e una esauriente bibliografia anche per le fasi preitaliane - sono esaminati nella loro distribuzione geografica e nella loro caratterizzazione morfologica come strumenti per risolvere problemi storiografici. Gli autori dei singoli saggi sono infatti altomedievalisti che, con grande sollievo per tutti, non hanno alle spalle un condizionante approccio classificatorio degli oggetti, con le conseguenti immaginarie ricostruzioni sociali. Gli insediamenti nel bacino dell'Elba e in Pannonia, che in genere compaiono come breve introduzione alla fase preitaliana, sono esaminati come periodi fondamentali nella costituzione dell'identità dei Longobardi. I periodi in cui maturò la strutturazione sociale dell'exercitus e si formò l'identità della figura regia, in rapporto ai contatti sia con gli altri popoli sia con le popolazioni di tradizione latina. La migrazione, usualmente interpretata come esodo di massa, viene qui scandita minuziosamente come processo di lunga durata che portò innanzitutto al confronto interno di gruppi di Longobardi stanziati in sedi diverse. Le necropoli non sono più lo specchio fedele di presunte strutturazioni sociali, ipotizzate attraverso le percentuali delle tombe con sax, spade, archi e frecce a cui siamo abituati, ma tappe di un viaggio condotto sulla scorta dell'Origo gens Longobardorum, che segue di passo in passo le modificazioni culturali che segnarono la lenta trasformazione dalla gens dei Winnili al popolo dei Longobardi. Jorg Jarnut e Manfred Menke, sulla scorta della fonte letteraria opportunamente analizzata e confrontata, permettono al lettore di considerare i Longobardi in Italia non più come i violenti invasori di ingenua e primordiale rozzezza, ma come popolo con una propria complessa tradizione che si confrontò con la cultura latina in modo non caotico, né passivo, né casuale, che strutturarono il loro rapporto con i latini secondo modalità già ampiamente sperimentate nei loro precedenti stanziamenti. Anche i contributi di Paolo Delogu, Lidia Capo e Stefano Gasparri, dedicati a delineare il ventaglio dei problemi del periodo longobardo in Italia, sono strutturati come revisioni integrali del materiale archeologico e documentario, sulla scorta di un'interpretazione dell'Historia Longobardorum come fonte stratificata in cui alla narrazione dei fatti si sovrappongono elementi tradizionali ed anacronistici. Sono così riesaminati alcuni nodi fondamentali della tradizione storiografica: la condizione di subalternità dei "vinti" e quindi la sorte dei possessori romani nel rinnovato contesto politico, il ruolo delle città nell'evoluzione del regno longobardo, il rapporto con la cultura classica e l'impero bizantino.
