Het is het verhaal een man die zijn geboorteplaats Toenjadevke (een straatarm gehucht) verlaat en in de voetstappen van twee grote… voorgangers, Alexander de Grote en Benjamin van Tudela, op zoek gaat naar het land van de Tien Verloren Stammen Israels. Volgens de overlevering moeten zij wonen aan de overkant van de Sambation, een legendarische rivier die zes dagen per week zo woest tekeergaat dat niemand er over kan. Op sjabbes rust de rivier, maar dan mag een vrome jood niet oversteken! Of Benjomin en zijn reisgezel Senderl - een speelse verwijzing naar Don Quichote en Sancho Panza - hun doel bereiken? In elk geval maken ze veel spannende avonturen mee. Mendele Mojcher Sforim beheerst het toneel als een ware conferencier, hij begeleidt zijn helden met virtuoos, soms sarcastisch commentaar en ziet ondertussen kans een onderonsje te vieren met zijn lezerspubliek - hij maakt er een hilarisch feest van. Mendele Mojcher Sforim (Mendele de Boekverkoper, pseudoniem van Sjolom Jankev Abramowitz) leefde van 1836 tot 1917. Hij werd geboren in een Litouwse rabbijnenfamilie. Tot zijn zeventiende bezocht hij diverse talmoedscholen, maar hij brak daarna met het religieuze leven. Hij sloot zich aan bij een groep zwervers, met wie hij de joodse getto's in Rusland aandeed. Tot zijn belangrijkste werken horen tevens Manke Fisjke (Jiddische bibliotheek deel 1) en De kleine mens.`We pinken een traan weg en verklaren met de hand op het hart: wie aan Fisjke komt, komt aan ons!?
