La Salle Street, Chicago; 1 Madison Ave New York; 235 Montgomery St., San Francisco, Calif.; 55 St. Francois Xavier St., Montreal. THE WILLIAM J. BURNS INTERNATIONAL DETECTIVE AGENCY, INC. 10TH SOUTH LA SALLE STREET" Kellner met intermediary fence agents in a downtown Childs Restaurant before moving the physical transaction over to the nearby famed Morrison Hotel. Stolen government bonds were bought by fences for a fraction of their face value - leaving Kellner with far less cash than the bank's loss. None of the stolen funds was recovered and the loss, including reward money paid, was absorbed by The Underwriters at Lloyd's, London. On February 25, 1920, 19 days after the theft, Kellner was caught in Sedalia, Missouri and was extradited to Cook County, Illinois. The police searched the Whipple Street, Chicago residence of his father, Benjamin Kellner, and found $4,568 in cash. On January 6, 1920, a month before the theft, he had secretly married Mayme Steele, a cashier at an Automat restaurant. She knew him as George A. Franze, the name on their marriage certificate. The marriage did not survive once she learned of his crime, prison sentence and his use of a false name. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 1 to 10 years in the Illinois State Penitentiary at Joliet. After his release Max sued his father to recover the $4,568 the police found at his father's houser, claiming it belonged to him, while his father refused to give it. After prison Kellner pursued his passions as a Chicago musician and cook, and apparently had no more brushes with the law. As WWI soldier fluent in French and German, his linguistic skills were valuable. multi-lingual soldiers were frequently utilized in intelligence, translation, or prisoner-of-war interrogations. His knowledge of Hebrew is very surprising. A century ago it was extremely rare for Europeans and Americans to be fluent in Hebrew. Perhaps it was really Yiddish. On the very day Kellner fled Chicago, he stopped by the Automat restaurant to say goodbye to his new wife.
