Photograph. 9" x 7" Type 1 black and white photo. Photo of New York Giants (L to R) Carl Hubbell, Cliff Melton, and Dick Bartell, in the dugout after defeating the Philadelphia Phillies to secure the pennant. Fine photo. Overall, a beautiful photo, capturing a significant moment in Hubbell's career. In 1937, the New York Giants won the National League pennant, but would go on to lose in the World Series against the New York Yankees in five games. This photo is taken after the Giants' pennant-clinching game against the Phillies, in which Carl Hubbell allowed only five hits and led his team to a 2-1 victory. Hubbell was a Hall of Fame pitcher who spent his entire career with the Giants. He won NL MVP honors twice (1933, 1936) and was selected for nine All-Star games. His most memorable moment in the league came when he struck out five all-time great hitters - Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin - in a row in the 1934 All-Star Game. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. Also featured in the photo are Dick Bartell and Cliff Melton - Bartell earned two All-Star selections in his career (1933, 1937), while Melton was selected as an All-star in 1942.
