Pub Year 2021, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> Nathaniel Mellors? The Sophisticated Neanderthal Interview explores the enduring concept of the Neanderthal as both a prehistoric figure and a metaphor for contemporary societal issues. The Neanderthal, once seen as a primitive and separate species from Homo Sapiens, embodies the colonial mindset of late 19th-century anthropology. Mellors reflects on how this objectification has shaped cultural perceptions, depicting Neanderthals as brutish cave dwellers. As scholarship evolves, the distinction between Neanderthals and modern humans diminishes, revealing that Neanderthals live within us genetically, responsible for traits such as blue eye colour and red hair.In this work, the Neanderthal serves not simply as an historical archetype but as a lens through which to examine current social dynamics related to class, race, culture, and sexuality. The title Neanderthal Container underscores the idea that contemporary humans contain remnants of Neanderthal identity, challenging the notion of clear lines between species. Instead of a narrative of eradication, Mellors suggests an entangled history of coexistence and interaction between the two groups. As the narrative unfolds, a modern individual encounters a Neanderthal living in a canyon in Los Angeles, where the roles are subverted: the Neanderthal proves to be more intelligent than the so-called 'Modern' individual. Through this encounter, Mellors urges readers to reconsider the implications of prehistory on present identities and cultural subjectivities. This interplay between past and present fosters a deeper understanding of human behaviour and identity, making The Sophisticated Neanderthal Interview a provocative exploration of how historical narratives shape modern existence.

paperback. Condition: New. NUOVO / NEW - Edizione in lingua inglese / English language edition - Brossura editoriale di 112 pagine illustrate a colori. Copia in condizioni di nuovo, ancora nel cellophane editoriale / Brand new, sealed copy -- Catalogo in accompagnamento all'omonima installazione realizzata per il padiglione finlandese della 57a Biennale di Venezia dagli artisti Nathaniel Mellors e Erkka Nissinen. L'opera ha come soggetto due divinità della mitologia egizia, Geb e Atum // This manual accompanies the installation The Aalto Natives realised for the 57th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia by Nathaniel Mellors and Erkka Nissinen. It reveals the full story of Geb and Atum, two terraforming mythical creatures who are floating through space in a vessel shaped not unlike the structure of the Aalto Pavilion. Exercising the all-encompassing knowledge that egg-borne mystical beings are typically blessed with, Geb and Atum mediate between the banal reality of objects and creatures, and the infinitely more advanced structures that lie beyond it. Along their mission of rebuilding Finland Geb, the wise father, and his rational-empirical son Atum, struggle to deal with the persistent faults, glitches, and transcendental mistakes they encounter in the formative stages of New Finland's national development. In the experience of Geb and Atum, culture presents itself as an eternal feedback loop of trial and error, a scatological dialectic of production and consumption, of shiny façades and vulgar essences, of bad mantras and glitchy technology, of sophisticated neanderthals and cosmic ducks. In all its grotesque display of failing social contracts and polarizing populism, it is surprisingly similar to the world we are living in today. Book.
