Age toning, edges lightly soiled. Profusely illustrated. *** "Presents a collection of the works of English fashion, portrait and war phot…ographer, diarist, painter, interior designer and an Academy Award winning stage and costume designer for films and the theatre, Cecil Beaton (1904-1980). Beaton is best known for his fashion photographs and society portraits. He worked as a staff photographer for Vanity Fair and Vogue, during the 1930's and 40's, in addition to photographing celebrities in Hollywood. Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother was his favorite Royal subjects, in addition to taking the famous wedding pictures of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Included are articles on various aspects of Beaton's art. The essay writers discuss Beaton's love of theatricality and artifice and its evidence in his style: subjects posed in period costume, shot against or reflected in mirrors, the photographer's own reflection visible in a photo, ironic and sometimes severely unflattering angles. Even his wartime photos have the oddly displaced quality of a stage set." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Beaton's beauties: self-representation, authority and British culture, by Dr David Mellor; Chronology: snapshots in time: a working life, by Terence Pepper; A fly in amber: Beaton as diarist, by Hugo Vickers; An instinct for style: the fashion photography of Cecil Beaton, by Philippe Garner; Landscape, nation and ideology: the role of the garden in Cecil Beaton's art, by Ian Jeffrey; Eggie's pupil: Beaton as artist, by Michael Parkin; The tyranny of the eye: the theatrical imagination of Cecil Beaton, by Ian Jeffrey and Dr. David Miller; Open secrets: identity, persona, and Cecil Beaton, by Stuart Morgan; [1.] Colour plates; [2.] The catalogue; Bibliography of Cecil Beaton's works; General bibliography; Acknowledgements; Photographic acknowledgements; Index of lenders; General index. Synopsis: Ramsey was the greatest of the remarkable generation of Cambridge philosophers and logicians which included G. E. Moore, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Maynard Keynes. Before his tragically early death in 1930 at the age of twenty-six, he had done seminal work in mathematics and economics as well as in logic and philosophy. This volume, with a new and extensive introduction by D. H. Mellor, contains all Ramsey's previously published writings on philosophy and the foundations of mathematics. The latter gives the definitive form and defence of the reduction of mathematics to logic undertaken in Russell and Whitehead's Principia Mathematica; the former includes the most profound and original studies of universals, truth, meaning, probability, knowledge, law and causation, all of which are still constantly referred to, and still essential reading for all serious students of these subjects. David Deadman (Jacket Design); Lettice (Photo of Frank Ramsey by) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. MELLOR, Dr. David [edited by] [256] pp. Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1986 11 3/8" x 9 3/8" The work of Cecil Beaton, best known for his photography of fame and fashion, is being shown in copious quantity in a lavish exhibition in London's Barbican Center. Visitors wan…der through 20 galleries, each with its own decor, that display 700 photographs, paintings, costumes, drawings and other items created by this extraordinarily imaginative and keen-eyed figure, who died in 1980 at the age of 76. Beaton's artistic genius projected a special cachet to portraits of British kings and queens, of Picasso, Dali, Joe Louis, Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo, to name only a few of the people who dropped by to face his cameras. His infatuation with the Edwardian age into which he was born was translated into costumes for both the stage and the film hit versions of the musical, ''My Fair Lady.''.
