Superb and tight first editions of the first two volumes only (out of three) of this compilation of hard-to-find primary sources. This set bears t…wo fine, choice additions: Tipped in facing each title page as frontispieces are Civil War-era steel-engraved portraits of two leading Union and Confederate figures. In the first volume is a superb full-length seated portrait of George G. Meade in uniform seated before his command tent with a sea of tents in the background; his facsimile signature appears below. Fine print notes Johnson, Fry & Co. of New York as publishers and the year as 1864. In the second volume is an outstanding head-and-shoulders portrait of Robert E. Lee in uniform, oval within a rectangle, and while year of publication is not noted the publisher is D. Appleton & Co. of New York. Volume I is limited to 750 copies, Volume II to 500 copies.
