Half-Leather. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. History of the American Baptist African & Haytien Missions - For the Use of Sabbath Schools - By the Author of Philip Everhard, or History of the Baptist Indian Missions. Scarce title. FIRST EDITION. Copyright 1831 by Christopher C. Dean. Revised by The Publishing Committee. Printed in 1831 by T.R. Marvin, for the Massachusetts Sabbath School Union, Depository, No. 47 Cornhill, Boston. No author listed. Newly published copies (& libraries) list Isaac McCoy as the author, though oddly his other attributed title (History of the Baptist Indian Missions) was first published 1840 & THIS copy clearly shows that title available in 1831 (on title page & also publisher's ads at rear, with "Philip Everhard" preceding the full title). "Isaac McCoy (1784-1846) was a Baptist missionary among the Native Americans in present-day Indiana, Michigan & Missouri. He was an advocate of Indian removal from the eastern United States, proposing an Indian state in what is now Kansas, Nebraska, & Oklahoma. He also played an instrumental role in the founding of Grand Rapids, Michigan & Kansas City, Missouri. In 1804 he married Christiana Polke (cousin of future President James K. Polk), whose family had been at the settlement at Kincheloe's Station in Kentucky when it was attacked, & her mother & four siblings were carried into captivity by the Shawnee before her birth, where they lived with the Indians for 13 months. Preacher, jailer, teacher, surveyor, & noted Baptist missionary to the Indians, McCoy traveled widely on the frontier promoting the Baptist church. With good intentions, McCoy began in 1823 to advocate that the Indian nations of the East be moved west 'beyond the frontiers of the White settlement'. In 1826, McCoy led his family deep into the frontier, establishing the Thomas Mission to the Odawa people, at what was to become Grand Rapids, Michigan. McCoy & his missionaries were the first European-American settlers in Niles & Grand Rapids. He hoped to be appointed as the government overseer of Indians. He lobbied in Washington & on the frontier seeking, unsuccessfully, for U.S. government recognition of the Indian lands as an official U.S. Territory. While in Missouri, a slave state, in 1835 McCoy purchased a female slave named Chainy. Opposed to slavery, he said he bought her to prevent her being separated from her husband & children by being sold through a slave market (he already owned her husband & children). In his will he provided for her children to be freed when each reached age 24. In 1840, McCoy wrote one of the earliest, most personally informed reports on the Midwestern Native American tribes, The History of Baptist Indian Missions. In 1842 he returned East to Louisville, Kentucky, where he directed the Baptist American Indian Mission Association. He wrote additional works on Indians & the missions." The rear three text pages contain printed poetry by William B. Tappan (1794-1849) & Rev. W. Croswell. Tappan was a pastor & evangelist; in 1822 became Superintendent of the American Sunday School Union; in 1849 ordained as a Congregational minister. The final leaf contains two pages of "Interesting Books for sale at the Depository of the Mass. Sabbath School Union" along with a list of publications, including aforementioned title by this same author (Philip Everhard, or History of the Baptist Indian Missions). Small thin volume (pocket-size). Bound in marbled paper-covered boards backed by black leather spine with gilt lettering & rules. NOTE: With contemporary ink name & date handwritten twice to early blanks: "John Bird Jr of Camden of Maine 1839" (likely from John Bird Co.). Covers loose (but holding), appears to lack leaf preceding title page (possibly a frontispiece?), small ink note to front pastedown, mild foxing throughout, some pencil scribbles to preliminary blank pages, handling wear, otherwise a clean tight hardcover copy. 70pp + 2pp ads. EXTREMELY RARE.
