Hardcover rebound in full black cloth, bound in the style of the original with decorative blind embossed designs in the corners and with titles and rules on the spine in gilt. Light wear to the binding. The text is a bit toned, and there is some damping at the top edge of the last few pages of the text block. Illustrated with a number of text drawings (listed as "Plates" in different sections) as well as a large folding map at the rear. There is a 4 or 5 inch closed tear on the folding map.

Marbled paste downs and endpapers inside. Quarto. 360 pages including extensive index and a large fold out map of the attack of Sevastopol Russia during the Crimean war during the 1850s. Presented to Jefferson Davis, who was the Secretary of War at that time. Previous owners name (Waite, U. S. Army) on the inside cover. Otherwise, Clean, has a good binding, no marks or notations. [5]-360pp. First edition. Very good book. Professionally repaired as to spine and new endpapers. Brown leather covered boards. Front and back panels decorative blind-stamped edges and triple blind-stamped borders. There are a number of illustrations and plates through-out the text, and a very large f/o map of "Sevastopol Shewing the Russian Defense Works and the Approaches of the Allied Armies" attached at the back. There are two tears where it attaches, 1 1/2" and 5 1/2" diagonal into one of the panels, both with old tape repairs. Flat spine with five sections. Gilt-stamped lettering in sections one, two and four. Age-toned to edges and pages. Light, intermittent foxing, mostly toward the front and back and on the map. Text block is snug.
