Condition: Fine. - 100 words typed on a cream-colored, 10-1/2 inch high by 9 inch wide sheet of "Department of the Air Force, Office of the Chief of Staff" letterhead with the address and the Department of Defense seal printed in blue at the top. Signed "H. M. Wade". The bottom right corner is lightly bumped. Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. Wade replies to a letter from Congressman Seymour Halpern soliciting his personal thoughts on achieving a lasting world peace. Wade assures Halpern of his desire for a just and lasting world peace, "however, although your request was for my personal 'views or formulas,' any comments by me on this critically important subject through other than official channels would be highly inappropriate."Horace Milton Wade [1916-2001] saw active service in World War II and the Vietnam War. In 1968 he was designated commander in chief, United States Air Forces in Europe and was promoted to general. The following year he was appointed chief of staff, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, and in 1972 he became Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force--the post he held when this letter was written. The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.

Top of spine frayed. Ephraim Auerbach (1892-1973) was a notable Yiddish poet, short story writer, and teacher. He contributed to a variety of Yiddish periodicals and published his poetry and stories. During World War I he joined the "Zion Mule Corps" (the Jewish Legion) founded by Joseph Trumpeldor and Vladimir Jabotinsky. Enrico Glicenstein (Enoch Hendryk Glicenstein)(Turek, Poland 24 May 1870 - New York, 30 December 1942) was a Polish-born sculptor who lived in Italy and the United States. Glicenstein initially showed interest in being a rabbi whilst working in Lodz painting signs and carving wood. After studying in Munich at the Royal Bavarian Academy of Art he married Helena Hirszenberg in 1896. The couple lived in Rome where he adopted the name "Enrico" and became an Italian citizen. In 1906 he returned from a trip to Germany and exhibited his paintings there until World War I broke out and he moved his family to Poland. He took over the Chair belonging to Xawery Dunikowski at the University of Warsaw in 1910. At the end of the war the family lived in Switzerland until they immigrated to London in 1920. During the next eight years he exhibited first in London and later in Rome and Venice. He immigrated to the United States in 1928 and died in a car accident in 1942. His son became a notable painter and lived in Safed in Israel. The Glicenstein Museum was founded in Safed, Israel and in 1985 became the Israel Bible Museum. Many of his sculptures are still displayed there. Glicenstein's works are found in a number of collections including the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Pompidou Centre, the Israel Museum, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, the Krakow and the Warsaw National Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Glicenstein has papers in the Smithsonian. Jean Cassou has published a book on Glicenstein Sculpture. Portraits of Glicenstein and his daughter Beatrice were made by his son Emanuel Glicen Romano. (His son changed his name to avoid being accused of exploiting his father's fame).
