Condition: Good. Time's Fool tells the tale of Edmund Lea, a young man condemned to eternity alone until he determines how to lift the curse upon him. Edmund perpetually rides a phantom train -- except on Christmas Eve every seven years, when he is allowed to revisit his English hometown. He tries to break the spell by way of love, repentance, and death -- all in vain. Time passes, from 1970 to 2019, but Edmund remains seventeen, unable to age but watching the world grow older. Infused with a dark humor and an almost unbearable nostalgia, Time's Fool is a brilliant achievement, "classic yet hip, stylized yet inventive" (Scotsman).…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. HISTORY EDUCATION IS IN DECLINE because it fails to provide knowledge useful in the future as other school subjects do. This book calls on history teachers to restore the power of historical learning. Education exists to impart knowledge useful in the future. School subjects other than history identify general principles derived from their subject matter that describe how the world works, principles that can be applied in the future such as addition in mathematics, grammar in language, and gravity in science. These disciplines pass on their general principles to teachers who pass on this knowledge to students. Historians, however, concentrate on describing events of the past. Without general principles to impart, history teachers are left to recount one-time bygone events, most of which have little or no relevance to the present and future. Without principles useful in the future, history is unable to fulfill the purpose of education the way other school subjects do; society has no practical means to learn from the past; and the cycle of historical ignorance can perpetuate indefinitely. Educators commonly try to compensate for history schooling's lack of knowledge useful in the future by emphasizing skills knowledge instead: critical thinking skills or the job skills of professional historians. Other school subjects also have their critical thinking skills and professional practices, but in these other disciplines general principles constitute the foundation of learning because knowledge of how the world works is a necessary prerequisite to critical thinking. In history education that prerequisite is missing. The truth is, history has been supplying humans with useful principles of knowledge for at least 2,400 years, since the time of Thucydides in Greece and Sun Tzu in China. In earlier times, history could involve more than the act of describing past events; it could involve the ambition to derive from events principles useful in the future, an ambition that the history profession has largely abandoned. This loss deprives historical learning of the power possessed by other intellectual disciplines. If historians wish to concentrate on the role of describing events of the past, that's their business. Then the task of providing knowledge useful in the future falls to history educators, because that's their business.FUNDAMENTALS OF FUTURE-FOCUSED HISTORY TEACHING INCLUDEFive basic principles of history educationA coherent and useful purpose to guide instructionFour kinds of historical knowledge relevant to the futureCriteria for weighing the importance of historical eventsFour essential cognitive learning strategies Author Maxwell believes that Future-Focused History Teaching has the potential to restore to historical learning the power that it once held but has since lost; to return history to its rightful place of prominence among the fundamental realms of knowledge taught in school and college; and to provide important knowledge of how the world works that can help students and society to function effectively in the future.Note: This book is not a classroom teaching guide with a collection of handy lesson plans. This book deals with fundamental premises and practices that underlie the work of every history teacher from grade school through graduate school.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Adventure writer Jessica Maxwell loves a challenge and decided to tackle golf the way she had tackled skiing and fly-fishing, two demanding sports she took up in her early thirties after a life as a confirmed non-jockette. Surely golf couldn't be that much more difficult?could it? In this irreverent memoir we have a front-row seat as Jessica struggles to learn golf's etiquette, traditions, and complex rules--from her first comical attempts to coax practice balls out of a golf ball machine, to just hitting the damn ball, to acquiring her own set of Nancy Lopez clubs Among her coaches are Peter Croker, a revolutionary Australian teaching pro, Cindy Swift Jones, his partner and putting guru, and Al Mundle, the Harvey Penick of the Northwest, as well as seventy-eight-year-old American women's golf legend Peggy Kirk Bell and the queen of golf herself, Nancy Lopez. A willful celebration of what one golf coach called the atrocious first year, Driving Myself Crazy is an often hilarious, always inspiring tale of one woman's obsession with proving to herself that golf--played right--is a beautiful game . at least for that moment.…

A lush and luminous gem of a novel: The Den is a book with depth and mystery and soul. --Chris Bohjalian, author of The Red Lotus Sisters Henrietta and Jane are fifteen and twelve, growing up in a farmhouse on the outskirts of a small New England town. When Henrietta becomes obsessed with a local boy, Jane takes to trailing the young couple, spying on their trysts. Until one night, Henrietta vanishes into the woods. A century and a half earlier, sisters Elspeth and Claire are separated by an ocean: Elspeth's pregnancy at seventeen meant she was quickly married and sent to America to avoid certain shame. Each in their own times, Jane and Claire must search for their missing sisters beneath the watchful eyes of their shared small town. With echoes of The Scarlet Letter, The Den is a transporting, layered tale of two women, living generations apart yet connected by place and longing, and condemned for the very same desires.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In these tales, with one foot firmly planted in the present, Maxwell brings a certain sophisticated urbanity to the oral traditions of the fable and fairy tale. The total effect is of something midway between the Brothers Grimm and Kafka, with perhaps a touch of Zen. (NYRB April 1966) While modern enough in locale and context, they are as old as humanity itself in what concerns them. And always that voice, the age old voice of the storyteller, the eternal magic of the speaking human voice. Such simplicity takes true artistry and Maxwell has that in spades. …
