Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Illustrated by Maxfield Parrish (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Printing. Publisher's full blue cloth, gilt lettering on spine and cover, yellow endpapers. Profusely illustrated with 64 full-page, full-color plates and hundreds of B&W illustrations. At the turn of the 20th Century a small group of artists, including Maxfield Parrish and N. C. Wyeth, were leading their contemporaries in imagination, scope, quantity and quality of their work. Parrish's work, when seen in person, has a glow and magical sense of light unlike almost any other paintings. He painted using a brilliant white ground on his canvas and then layered the colors, using one color at a time, with each one separated by a layer of vanish. As a result, light seems to travel from the surface of the painting through the colors to the white ground and is then reflected back to the viewer. The paintings seem to glow. Ludwig's book presents an excellent description of Parrish's process and provides an extensive selection of his work. The volume is in virtually perfect condition; unmarked, tight, square, bright, and clean. The unclipped dust jacket is also in excellent condition, with no tears except for very minor wear at the head of the spine. FINE/NEAR FINE. . Color and B&W Illustrations. 4to 11" - 13" tall. 223, (1) pp.

" (Kenneth Grahame). While still a young man in his 20s, Grahame began to publish light stories in London periodicals such as the St. James Gazette. Some of these stories were collected and published as Pagan Papers in 1893, and, two years later, The Golden Age. These were followed by Dream Days in 1898, which contains The Reluctant Dragon. There is a ten-year gap between Grahame's penultimate book and the publication of his triumph, The Wind in the Willows. During this decade, Grahame became a father. The wayward headstrong nature he saw in his little son Alastair (also known as "Mouse") he transformed into the swaggering Mr. Toad, one of its four principal characters. Despite its success, he never attempted a sequel." (from Wikipedia).
