Some cover soiling, wrinkling, wear and very small scale chips; contents sharp, bright, about Very Good overall; nice condition for this thin-but-large, fragile weekly. Glossy covers; first and last few internal pages are on newsprint, else all glossy. Rather spectacular full-page color illustrations (in every issue, in fact) by the coterie of guys who knew how to do what you see here. In the case of this issue, Cheri Herouard; Maurice Milliere; Georges Pavis; Pierre Lissac; Armand Vallee are credited for the big stuff, but some of the other very credit-worthy art is uncredited. See scans. Cute humor, from the same mood as mutoscope cards, or perhaps a bit (only a bit) more refined, yields the cover art caption: "Impertinence de Mi-Careme / Un Pied de Nez", for which I do not know the colloquial translation, for an artful depiction of a young lass about to don a mask; on the back cover, a king welcomes a brand spanking new young queen, who flirts with the old guy for her own reasons, as he gushes admiration of her. Understandably. Similar captioning throughout. Gentle titillation. Even the occasional partial nudity is rather tasteful and soft, though humorously flirtatious. All of the full page efforts are eminently frame-able, and at this time of a sensibility midway-evolved between nouveau and deco, as is much of the uncredited b&w illustration. An original - and of course first and only edition - of the 3/18/1922 issue of this memorable and long-lived French weekly offering of very soft, very artful light erotica. The captioned illustrations by the eminent "dessins" luminaries named above, and others in their clan, are what really "make" this issue (as was generally the case through the era), but cartoons, serial fiction and around-town pieces nicely compliment those. His skill as a draughtsman translated quickly into success as a cartoonist and illustrator and his brilliant interpretation of the "Modern Parisienne" soon became known as the "Petite femme de Millière". Skilfully using the technique of colour etching with drypoint, Millière created a modern woman who was coy, charming, independent and beautiful. Unconsciously erotic and quite adorable, his portrayals became known as "Femmes Poupées" (doll-women) and through them, he created the genre of boudoir art. His work was the prime inspiration for the popular "boudoir" painter and engraver, Louis Icart (1888-1950).Millière contributed to fashionable magazines of the time, including "La Vie Parisienne" and "Fantasio". He also contributed 13 illustrations to the Cornet Société, of which he was a member, between 1907 and 1939, most of them of the same woman - Fanny, who featured originally as a coy teenager and gradually developed into a voluptuous young woman.Millière's success continued to grow after the Great War of 1914-18 and he became closely involved with the welfare of children injured or orphaned during the War. He was the treasurer for Charitable Works in Montmartre, where he lived. For this, he was created Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur. Although his art became somewhat more restrained and less overtly erotic, he continued to work steadily and in various media. He also illustrated several books, including works by Gyp and Maurice Vaucaire. He travelled and worked in the French colonies, including Martinique.Millière developed into an establishment artist and he exhibited widely, at commercial galleries and at the Paris Salon as well as the Salon des Humoristes and l'Exposition Coloniale, where he was a gold medallist in 1931, when he was 59.Millière died at the age of 74, in 1946.

Peintre, graveur et illustrateur, contemporain de Louis ICART (1880-1950), Maurice MILLIERE (Le Havre 1871 - 1946) termine ses études secondaire à l'Ecole des Beaux-arts du Havre. En 1889, il se rend à Paris et poursuit son cursus à à l'École…des Arts Décoratifs et à l'École des Beaux-Arts. Artiste apprécié au talent reconnu, il a inspiré Alberto Vargas (1896 - 1982). Illustrateur prolifique, Maurice MILLIERE crée des images utilisées dans des magazines tels que La Vie Parisienne et Fantasio, sur des cartes postales, des affiches, des menus et des emballages de produits. Son succès le conduit à exposer au Salon des Artistes Français et au Salon du Humoristes. En 1931 à l'Exposition Coloniale il obtient une médaille d'or. L'oeuvre de Maurice MILLIERE est intimiste, cette aquarelle en est un bel exemple. Une femme, le buste dénudé est assise face au dossier d'une bergère, un châle bleu sur les genoux. Elle tient dans ses mains délicates un masque d'homme. Une conversation intime et secrète a lieu dans ce boudoir. Déchirures et piqûres marginales, usure transversale. Oeuvre originale. .
