hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. This is the Madge Bellamy Edition. You can see the covers in the photographs provided. The front cover looks terrific. The color in the lettering on the spine has faded away. You can read the underlying lettering. The rear cover looks very good as well. There is a bit of light soiling. There is very little wear on the covers. Remarkably, there's no rubbing on the corners, no wear on the edges. There is a little crease below the top rear corner. Perhaps even more importantly, this thick 351 page book is square, straight, and very solidly bound (I saw only one very thin space between two facing pages, each securely bound). I turned over all the pages in the book making sure that all the illustrations (23 of them) were present. They are. And they are in excellent condition. The text pages are also in excellent condition. You'll find only an occasional spot of soiling. There are also probably close to ten pages with a fingerprint off the edge. The title page has a tiny spot under the 'e' in Scenes. There is a light scratch/scuff on the middle page edge. It created a nick on the edge of about 30 pages (no tears). I did notice that they were two small thin tears coming up off the bottom edge of two pages, neither reaching the print. I also noticed that there were around 20 consecutive pages with a light impression/crease in the same spot, where something might have pressed against the pages. It's quite minor, more an impression than a crease. My overall impression of the 351 pages is that they are in Very Good condition, the great majority of them look perfect. They are also, surprisingly, fairly bright. There are no markings in this book. No attachments. A previous owner penned her name near the bottom right-hand corner of the first front end paper, a page which, with the front inside cover, forms a large illustration. There is absolutely no other writing to be found anywhere in the book. Richard Doddridge Blackmore, known as R. D. Blackmore, was one of the most famous English novelists of the second half of the nineteenth century. Lorna Doone was originally published in 1869. It is a romance based on a group of historical characters and set in the late 17th century in Devon and Somerset, particularly around the East Lyn Valley area of Exmoor. In 2003, the novel was listed on the BBC's survey The Big Read. Illustrated in Color by Harold Brett, And Duo-Tone Prints of Scenes from the Photo-Play Produced by Maurice Tournier (illustrator).…

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1981 Oxford University Press hardcover edition. Ex library copy with stamps and labels else good condition. From the dustjacket: Sir Richard Southern was a fellow and tutor of Balliol College, Oxford, from 1937 to 1961, Chichele Professor of Modern History from 1961 to 1969, and since 1969 has been President of St. John's College, Oxford. In this book will be found seventeen essays by his old pupils on various aspects of a subject which he made particularly his own, The Writing of History in the Middle Ages. Ranging from the eighth century to the fifteenth, and from Scotland to Byzantium, the essays illustrate both the unity and the breadth of Sir Richard's teaching. Norman and Anglo-Norman historians (from Worcester to Bec-Hellouin, and Bec-Hellouin to Salerno) receive special attention, but there are also studies of confession and sermons as historical sources; of legal history and chivalrous history; of German town chroniclers; and of the biographer of King Henry VI. All these essays are original contributions to their subject, containing new material, and in several cases preparing the ground for new editions. In some measure they illustrate the combination of profound scholarship, sympathetic understanding, and literary form which are the hallmarks of Sir Richard's own work.
