Henry Roth nel 1934 pubblicò un romanzo, Call It Sleep( Chiamalo sonno, Milano 1964), ormai riconosciuto come uno dei capolavori di questo secolo; e quindi, improvvisamente, si ritirò dalla scena letteraria, sparendo per decenni nel Maine ad allevare anatre. Riscoperto agli inizi degli anni Sessanta, Call It Sleep ha da allora venduto oltre un milione e mezzo di copie, ed è stato tradotto in una decina di lingue. Contraddicendo la sua immagine di straordinario scrittore inariditosi nel silenzio, Roth ha intanto ripreso a scrivere, centellinando la sua produzione con racconti e prose brevi, e lavorando tenacemente a un "romanzo in forma di memoria", Mercy of a Rude Stream. Il presente volume - che include alcune pagine inedite di Roth, da un diario all'epoca della Guerra dei sei giorni - raccoglie tutto quanto è stato pubblicato sullo scrittore in Italia, dal primo saggio (risalente al 1962) ad oggi. Offre inoltre, per la prima volta, la bibliografia completa degli scritti di Roth, e la più vasta bibliografia critica finora compilata.
