In Development as Freedom Amartya Sen explains how in a world of unprecedented increase in overall opulence millions of people living in the Third World are still unfree. Even if they are not technically slaves, they are denied elementary freedoms and remain imprisoned in one way or another by economic poverty, social deprivation, political tyranny or cultural authoritarianism. The main purpose of development is to spread freedom and its 'thousand charms' to the unfree citizens. Freedom, Sen persuasively argues, is at once the ultimate goal of social and economic arrangements and the most efficient means of realizing general welfare. Social institutions like markets, political parties, legislatures, the judiciary, and the media contribute to development by enhancing individual freedom and are in turn sustained by social values. Values, institutions, development, and freedom are all closely interrelated, and Sen links them together in an elegant analytical framework. By asking 'What is the relation between our collective economic wealth and our individual ability to live as we would like?' and by incorporating individual freedom as a social commitment into his analysis Sen allows economics once again, as it did in the time of Adam Smith, to address the social basis of individual well-being and freedom. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The main focus of this book is on the causation of starvation in general and of famines in particular. The author develops the alternative method of analysis--the 'entitlement approach'--concentrating on ownership and exchange, not on food supply. The book also provides a general analysis of the characterization and measurement of poverty. Various approaches used in economics, sociology, and political theory are critically examined. The predominance of distributional issues, including distribution between different occupation groups, links up the problem of conceptualizing poverty with that of analyzing starvation. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

The golden island of Tahiti seemed a paradise to the sea-weary crew of H.M.S Dolphin when, in 1767, they first set foot on its shores. This account of their experiences was written by the Master, to whose vivid and unspoken narrative have been added some piquant details from the Journals of other members of his ship's company. It paints an extremely entertaining picture of what happened when a party of English sailors stumbled into a Garden of Eden. Robert Gibbings, the illustrator, knew Tahiti well, and loved it: his engravings , exquisite in detail, convey all the timeless fascination of the island better than any camera. A brilliant read and definitively a book to be preserved for future generations.

First Edition. (i) Very large initial 'M' (161 x 164 mm, perhaps introducing the chant Maria Magdalena et altera Maria for Easter Monday in an Antiphonal) enclosing a scene of the Two Maries and the Angel at the Tomb set before a fine dawn landscape, a large rocky outcrop behind the tomb, the outer stems of the 'M' terminating in human feet, the central stem indicated at the head by a suspended classical capital and at the foot by a column base on which appear the small initials 'B F', the column base clasped by two blue human hands which emerge from the foliage attached to the outer stems of the 'M', the whole delicately painted in colours and silver (oxidised), heightened in gold and set against a burnished gold ground; some surface cracking and slight discolouration of the burnished gold, otherwise in excellent condition; pasted into a card mount. (ii) Very large initial 'N' (169 x 177 mm, perhaps introducing the chant Nos autem gloriari for Maundy Thursday in a Gradual) enclosing Christ Washing Peter's Feet, St John standing behind Christ with a towel, set within a richly decorated classical room around which eight other disciples are seated, the initial 'N' itself partly encased and entwined by elaborate foliage and incorporating a grotesque bust and two birds' heads whose beaks interlock at the top centre, the whole delicately painted in colours and silver (oxidised), heightened in gold, and set against a burnished gold ground; some retouching of an area of the frieze and the coffered ceiling where evidently once damaged, some surface cracking of the burnished gold, otherwise in excellent condition; pasted into a card mount. (iii) Very large initial 'S' (162 x 166 mm, perhaps introducing the chant Salve sancta parens in a Gradual) enclosing the Birth of the Virgin, StAnne lying in a canopied bed with a green coverlet and the baby, in swaddling clothes, being handed by a nurse to a woman in the foreground, the initial 'S' formed of two stylised dolphins whose tails terminate in cornucopias, the whole delicately painted in shades predominantly of blue, green, brown, and grey and set against a burnished gold ground; some flaking of the burnished gold along the left-hand side of the initial, otherwise in excellent condition; pasted into a card mount. Three extremely fine initials by the enigmatic artist known as Master B.F., one of the most inventive and accomplished illuminators of the Italian High Renaissance. They come almost certainly from a magnificent set of about twenty choirbooks belonging to the Olivetan monastery of Santi Angelo e Niccolò of Villanove Sillaro in the diocese of Lodi, near Milan, which was suppressed in 1799. 'Master B.F.' is the name first assigned in 1931 to the artist of the Villanova Sillaro initials by Paul Wescher, who in 1960 suggested that he was to be identified with Francesco Binasco (Francesco da Lonate, also known as 'il Binasco') and that the letters 'B' and 'F' stood for 'Binascus Fecit'. While ostensibly rather implausible, some of the artist's initials are signed simply 'B'. Francesco da Lonate was an illuminator, goldsmith and engraver documented as occupying the official positions 'revisore' of the Mint and 'miniatore ducale' under the Sforza dukes Massimiliano Maria (15121515) and Francesco II (15211535). However, since Binasco is not recorded before 1513 (Master B.F's activity is datable from 1490 onwards) and no documented works by him have been discovered with which to compare the miniatures signed by Master B.F., Wescher's theory remains controversial. The only documented illuminator at Villanova Sillaro at the right time is Fra Giovanni da Verona (c.14571525). 'Scholars have situated Master B.F.'s artistic production within the Leonardesque school of painting that developed in Lombardy in the early 1500s, identifying derivations of both figural types and compositional motifs in the monumental works of Leonardo da Vinci who was active in Milan from about 1482 to 1499 and again from 1506 to.

Recto with a three-line initial in blue on gold ground embellished with ivy leaves, A HALF-PAGE MINIATURE DEPICTING THE MASS OF ST. GREGORY, the recently crucified Christ depicted emerging from a tomb supported by an angel and surrounded by the Arma Christi, St. Gregory kneeling at the corner of the image, the text and miniature framed by thick bar borders of pink, blue, and gold on three sides, all SURROUNDED BY A FULL BORDER of hairline vines, gilt ivy leaves and bezants, and a few colorful flowers and acanthus. A little faint smudging in top and bottom borders, very small (scarcely noticeable) area of blue background retouched (not affecting the figures), but A BEAUTIFUL LEAF, the colors bright and the detail in the miniature very well preserved. Featuring carefully realized detail, intriguing iconography, and artistry that shows a very high degree of skill, this is an important and early example of the work of the Master of the Harvard Hannibal. The subject of the present work is a well-known story about the sixth century Pope Gregory (ca. 540-604), commonly known as St. Gregory the Great. According to legend, Gregory was saying Mass when one of his deacons expressed a doubt in the doctrine of Transubstantiation, whereby the communion bread actually becomes the body of Christ. Gregory prayed to God for a verifying sign, whereupon Christ appeared in the guise of the Man of Sorrows, clad in a loincloth and displaying the bloody wounds he incurred during the Crucifixion. Most Medieval miniatures depict Gregory kneeling before an altar as he says Mass, accompanied by one or more deacons or assistants who bear witness to the miraculous event. In a notable departure from this norm, the present miniature depicts the saint alone at the edge of the picture plane; in place of the chalice, host, and altar that would normally occupy the center of the scene is a considerable, open tomb from which a larger-than-life-size Christ emerges. With blood still rushing from his wounds, he places one hand on the edge of the tomb to steady himself while an angel supports him from behind. Christ's expression conveys both physical and mental pain as he struggles to support his own bodyweight; the angel who assists him spreads his wings protectively around the body of Christ, while looking down at Gregory with a sorrowful expression knitted into his brow. The fine detail work seen in the figures' faces, the angel's wings, and the careful delineation of each slender finger is also carried over into more than a dozen objects crammed into the spaces in and around the tomb (the rope is especially remarkable in the representation of its detail). Known as the "Arma Christi," or "Instruments of the Passion," these objects are meant to symbolize Christ's suffering. Seen here are: the cross, nails, and hammer that were used to crucify Christ, the ladder used in the Deposition, the disembodied hand symbolizing the one which slapped Christ's face, the dice used by soldiers to see who would claim his seamless robe, a lantern used by the soldiers who arrested Christ, the 30 pieces of silver from Judas' betrayal, a purple robe used in the mockery of Christ, and other items that appear as part of the Passion narrative. It is also interesting to note that although a St. Gregory miniature usually appears at the beginning of the Hours of the Cross, the Penitential Psalms, or before the Seven Prayers of St. Gregory, here, rather unusually, it opens a reading from John chapter 19 (beginning "In illo tempore adprehendit Pilatus Iesum et flagellavit"), describing the events of the Passion. This miniature can be attributed to an artist known as the Master of the Harvard Hannibal, so-named for a splendid miniature painting of the "Coronation of Hannibal" prefacing a Livy in the.

Extremely scarce first edition of Leclerc's important work on binocular vision in which he finds that one of the eyes has a dominant status, thus announcing the discovery of the "Master-eye" - a discovery of outmost importance in the theory of shooting and elsewhere. With use of diagrams he shows that "things that can be seen clearly are seen with but one single eye.". He records and depicts a large series of experiments with binocular vision and shows geometrically the relation to the science of perspective, and points out the importance of understanding the physiology of binocular vision for perspective painting in general.Sebastien Leclerc was originally an engraver who studied physics and geometry in relation to perspective theory, a field of which he became famous. In 1672 he was appointed to "l'Academie de Peinture" as professor in perspective. He was also engraver to Louis XIV and was appointed professor at "l'Ecole des Gobelins".
