ĞUn pozzo potrebbe apparire un modesto indicatore dell'impianto di un abitato antico abbandonato da secoli. In realtà è una struttura primaria, la spia della ricerca immediata dell'acqua da parte dei coloni, in quel caso giunti da molte miglia di distanza per fondare, nel 599-98 a.C., Camarina, terza sub colonia di Siracusa a presidio del confine con il territorio di Gela, rodio-cretese. Paolo Masci analizza e cataloga il "riempimento" del pozzo A1, individuato e esplorato durante le indagini della Soprintendenza alle Antichità di Siracusa, negli anni '60-70, su tutta l'estensione della città (ca 150 ha), della quale si intravvedevano ancora i resti della cinta muraria che la difendeva fin dagli inizi. Il libro può giustificare l'asserzione che "gli scavi generano libri". In verità alcuni importanti siti della Sicilia sono documentati in collane di volumi editi nel corso degli anni, da Meligunís-Lipara a Megara Hyblaea, a Himera, a Morgantina e altri, ma sono forse più numerosi i siti per i quali questo non avviene. Abbiamo, in questo, privilegiato il modello di contributi dell'Agorà di Atene, che, con lo studio dei riempimenti di pozzi, offriva uno spaccato di vita ateniese, privata ma anche pubblica. Ma cosa è il riempimento di un pozzo? È innanzi tutto ciò che gli archeologi chiamano "un contesto chiuso", di notevole interesse in quanto può fornire dati cronologici non alterati da intrusioni già in antico o da frequenti interferenze moderne. Uno dei primi atti, nella rioccupazione di un sito in antico, fu la chiusura di cavità, come quella di un pozzo: da qui il "riempimento". Il lavoro di P. Masci è stato accompagnato da una lunga permanenza al Museo di Camarina e nei suoi depositi, con l'appoggio del Direttore del Museo e del polo museale, Dott. Giovanni Di Stefano. L'esecuzione dei profili di ogni pezzo, più di un centinaio, è di mano dell'A., sí che riteniamo che il catalogo e la documentazione saranno di riferimento in futuro anche per pubblicazioni di altri siti della Siciliağ.
