It would give her 'very much pleasure' to accept the invitation 'to join you & other dear workers in the Temperance Work you are planning for April, but I am sorry to say at present I am quite liad aside from all work'. She describes how she has been ill since the previous October. She is now regaining strength, and is going into the country and will probably 'remain away for 2 or 3 months[.] The doctors speak hopefully of entire recovery so that I may hope some day to be at work again, but I am afraid the next 6 months will have to be spent in much idleness'. A richly illustrated 17th-century edition of Paradisus animae Christianae, the celebrated devotional work by Jacobus Merlo Horstius, pastor at St. Maryâs, Pfarrkirche, near Cologne. Known as one of the most influential Catholic spiritual books of the post-Tridentine era, the Paradisus offers meditations, prayers, and reflections for cultivating piety in daily life, often compared to Thomas à Kempisâ Imitatio Christi. This Gedani (GdaÅsk) printing of 1683 is notable for its fine copperplate engravings, including an allegorical frontispiece, a devotional title-page in red and black, and full-page plates depicting the Trinity, the Crucifixion, the Madonna and Child, and other religious scenes. These engravings made the Paradisus especially popular as a visual as well as a textual guide for meditation. Provenance: Early ownership inscription âEx Libris M. Davidâ on front pastedown, dated 18th century. Signs of devotional use, with expected wear to binding and light age-toning. Bound in contemporary full calf, rubbed and worn with losses to spine ends, but structurally solid. All edges gilt, interior remarkably clean with engravings well-preserved. A handsome survival of one of the most important Catholic devotional works of the 17th century, in an attractive illustrated edition. 1683 Gedani edition of Horstiusâ Paradisus animae Christianae, richly illustrated with engraved plates, in contemporary calf with gilt edges and early ownership inscription.
