"In technique and theme the essays in this volume illustrate the progress that modern Chinese historical studies have made since the early 1900s, when H. B. Morse and Henri Cordier shunning both the minutiae of contemporary sinology and the condescension of treaty-port journalism, turned to look as historians at the last century of the Manchu empire. The twelve studies range chronically from the early eighteenth century to the early twentieth - the late Ch'ing period and the Republic. Their subject matter sounds four motifs, which, if they were present at all in the first state of of modern China, were muted: the internal political-institutional history of modern China, the texture of intellectual life, the nature of the traditional and semi-modern economy, and the foreign relations of China interpreted as something more than conventional diplomatic history.".

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a detailed chronicle of the intertwined lives and times of the Haines, Rhoads, Ellis, and Cox families, all of whom played significant roles in the development of Quaker communities in Pennsylvania and New Jersey during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The author, a descendant of these families, traces their origins back to England and Wales, exploring their religious beliefs, motivations for immigrating to America, and the challenges and triumphs they faced as they settled in the New World. Through meticulous research of original records, private memoranda, and correspondence, the author paints a vivid picture of the social, economic, and spiritual landscape of early America, shedding light on the Quaker experience and its impact on the broader society. The book offers a unique blend of historical narrative and genealogical research, providing insights into the lives of ordinary people who played extraordinary roles in shaping their communities and the nation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
