Cloth. Condition: Good. First Edition (English language). . 196 pages. Oddly for an atlas, this contains only 9 maps, but has about 24 sections of text on different periods of the Biblical account and historical background, each referencing the numerous black and white photographs included. It was originally issued in the author's native Dutch language as "Kleine Atlas van de Bijbel" - there is a longer "Atlas of the Bible" by the same author, a Roman Catholic priest and academic of the Dominican order who lived 1916-1997.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. ATLAS OF THE EARLY CHRISTIAN WORLD. By F. VAN DER MEER and CHRISTINE MOHRMANN.\ Translated by MARY F. HEDLUND, M.A., with introduction by H. H. ROWLEY, M.A., B.Litt., D.D., LL.D., F.B.A. Thomas Nelson & Sons, London and Edinburgh, 1958. Beautiful Map Book! 216pp., 620 plates and 42 maps. GOOD strong condition free from past names or marginalia on the maps. No tears or creases. Well cared for book. Clear new plastic removable covering. According to a 1858 review of this edition there are (paraphrased by me): Minor inaccuracies exist, particularly in the case of maps of Asia Minor; several sites wrongly or inconsistently located e.g. in Map 14 that Adrassus, in Isauria, is placed slightly north of the Ermenek Su, but in Map 16 on the Calycadnus. In Cilicia; Flaviopolis is identified with Sis, which is now called Kozan; while Epiphania appears well to the north instead of to the south of the Amanian Gates. The spelling of Turkish place-names is chaotic, the phonetic transliterations of 19th-century European travellers. Binbir kilise (The Thousand and One Churches), in Lycaonia, appears as; Binbirkalesi, which is meaningless. Kanli Divane, in Cilicia, becomes Kanidiwan; the adoption by scholars of the modern Turkish orthography. 40 of them, plus the large maps on the inside covers, show the locations of churches and other important matters: Map 1, gives the locations of all churches of the first century referred to in ancient sources. As well, their putative provenances. Map 2 is a color-coded display of the spread of Christianity by 300 CE, the various colors showing the estimated density of Christians in various areas of the Roman Empire. Map 4 shows the location of churches founded before the persecution by Diocletian (304 CE). Map 5 shows churches in the 2nd century. Map 7 churches in the 3rd century, and so on down through to ca. 600 CE. Map 15b shows early Christian monuments between Antioch and Beroea. Map 18 churches of the ancient Diocese of Egypt. The book includes 150 pp. of photos of particular ancient artifacts and constructions pertaining to early Christianity with details of their origins. I love the rear endpaper map showing the writers locations!!
