Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover 1st edition. Book itself is in fine condition - aside from a hint of shelfwear appears almost unread. Dust jacket is a little frayed along edges, otherwise good. Book covers are dark brown with gilt titles on spine. Lucy Booth Martyn was a Toronto social and architectural historian whose other works include Aristocratic Toronto: 19th Century Grandeur, published by Gage Publishing in 1980 — a companion volume covering the grand families of the nineteenth century with genealogies of the Baldwin, Denison, and Jarvis families. The book is a social history of Toronto's great houses and the families who built and inhabited them, covering the period from the city's earliest years through the early twentieth century. The WorldCat contents listing names the houses treated, giving the volume its organizing structure: The Canvas House, Castle Frank, Berkeley House, Russell Abbey, Davenport, Beverley House, Belle Vue, The Bishop's Palace, Spadina I, Rosedale House, Holland House, Drumsnab, Colborne Lodge, Lyndhurst, and Wykeham Hall, among others. Each house is treated as a lens through which the social world of Toronto's governing and merchant élite becomes visible — who built it, who lived there, what relationships and rivalries connected one household to another, and what the physical evolution of the building reflects about the changing fortunes of its owners. A bookseller's note confirms the book's genealogical dimension, describing it as a social history of Toronto in its early years with a focus on the families who significantly influenced the city's development. The Goad's 1884 Atlas of Toronto street maps are incorporated, giving the book additional value as a cartographic document of the Victorian city.…
