Softcover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. First Edition. "Leonardo da Vinci and the Art of Sculpture" offers a fresh perspective on the renowned Renaissance polymath through the lens of his engagement with sculpture. This stiff softcover First Edition thus, in impeccable As New condition, invites readers to explore Leonardo's lesser-known yet significant contributions to the world of sculpture.Published on November 24, 2009, this volume is a testament to Leonardo's multifaceted genius, shedding light on his work as a painter, designer, draftsman, architect, engineer, scientist, and theorist. While his prowess in these fields is widely acknowledged, his involvement in sculpture is often overlooked. This book seeks to challenge such assumptions by examining Leonardo's sculptural projects, influences, and the works of art he inspired.Despite prevailing notions that Leonardo viewed sculpture as inferior to painting, the book reveals his deep engagement with this art form. Drawing inspiration from ancient sculptures and admiring the innovations of contemporary sculptors like Donatello, Leonardo's sculptural endeavors were far-reaching. Notably, he trained under Andrea del Verrocchio, a prominent bronze sculptor of late 15th-century Florence. One of the book's highlights is Leonardo's ambitious undertakings: two larger-than-life-sized horse sculptures intended as monuments to Francesco Sforza, the Duke of Milan, and his successor Gian Giacomo Trivulzio. While neither project was completed, they provide insight into Leonardo's design challenges and his intense study of equine anatomy and movement.Additionally, the book features new images of "John the Baptist Preaching to a Levite and a Pharisee," a recently restored work in the Florentine Baptistery. Through this piece, co-authored by Leonardo and Giovanni Rustici, readers gain insight into Leonardo's collaborative approach and his influence on his contemporaries.Your copy of "Leonardo da Vinci and the Art of Sculpture" will be meticulously packaged for shipment, ensuring its protection from the elements.
