Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Captain Frederick Marryat (1792 - 1848) was indeed a British naval officer. He pioneered the naval novel, writing stories that portrayed with great verisimilitude life on the sailing ships of the late 17th and early 19th centuries. His best-known work is "Mr Midshipman Easy" which is semi-autobiographical in content (Marryat served as a midshipman aboard the frigate HMS Imperieuse. He later served on several other ships.) "Masterman Ready : or The Wreck of the Pacific, Written For Young People" is a maritime novel by Marryat, revised and abridged for the juvenile market : "Written for Young People". The novel was originally issued in three parts and published in England in 1841. The copy presented here is the First American Edition of the Third Part ("Third Series"), abridged to one volume, and published in 1843 by D. Appleton and Company in its popular series, "Tales for the People and their Children". This is an exciting story of adventure and peril, with action taking place both at sea and on land. In large part the story is about a shipwrecked family similar to "The Swiss Family Robinson" novel. SERIES : Tales for the People and their Children - Third Series. TITLE : Masterman Ready : or The Wreck of the Pacific Written for Children (In One Volume) AUTHOR : Captain Marryat (Frederick Marryat, 1792 - 1848) IMPRINT : D. Appleton and Company PLACE : 200 Broadway, New York DATE : 1843 EDITION : First American Edition Thus (of the Third Series) [Abridged to One Volume] STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Small trade hardcover published for the juvenile market; Contains an engraved frontispiece; 137 pages [includes the author's apology on the last page], plus 22 pages of the publisher's list, variously paginated. Size is 3 3/4" x 5 3/4" [approximate 24mo]; brown cloth-covered boards with decorative embellishment in blind on boards, and lettering and embellishment in gilt on spine. Front board has title and author stamped in blind. Rear board is sans lettering. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS ONLY -- This is a previously owned book which has seen considerable use, but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following imperfections and particulars noted: EXTERIOR - Spine extremities are mildly compressed; the gilt on the spine is somewhat faded, but still presents. Moderate surface rub and scuffing; small, vague ink stains exhibit along the fore-edge of the rear cover; board corner tips are softly bumped; text-block edges display small specking to top edge, and general toning, else clean. BINDING - The book has been read, likely more than once, so the text-block is hardly as tight as when issued, being slightly shaken, and with a slight lean to the front. This being said, the whole remains fairly solid, with no detached or loose leaves. INTERIOR - The paper is considerably foxed throughout, but most noticeably on end-papers and preliminary leaves, and through the publisher's list. There may be, scattered throughout, small spotting, smudges and spots, but nothing of any egregiousness is evident, and the whole remains clean and serviceable.…
