This copy was presented to L Crane by Lady marling, the author's wife. There is a slight musty odour. Preface has edges strengthened by tissue paper. Errata slip tipped in. The author had more than 30 years Army Service and took part in six campaigns, earning a VC in the Sudan in 1884. Boer War 1880-1881, Suakin Campaign 1884, Nile Campaign 1884-1885, South African War 1899-1900, 1900-1902, The Great War 1914-1918.

Pages are moderately tanned at the edges, with notable foxing. Considerable cracking to hinges, with exposed netting and a firm binding. Boards have moderate shelf wear with bumping to corners. Spine ends are notably crushed with considerable tanning. Boards are slightly bowed.

Despite this, the boards remain whole and intact. Internally, there is a previous owner's signature under the front board and there is light foxing and tanning throughout, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are crisp, clean and complete with all plates and maps.
