In 2005, it was revealed that author Mark Felt was indeed Deep Throat, the anonymous source for journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein during the Watergate Investigation. It had been speculated for years that he was the anonymous source, including speculation by Nixon himself. As Associate Director of the FBI in the early 1970s, he was privy to all information about the FBI investigation of the Watergate break-in. Felt passed away in 2008. This is Mark Felt's memoir about his career at the FBI, from counter-espionage agent to J. Edgar Hoover's right-hand lieutenant, written years before it was revealed that he was Bob Woodward's source "Deep Throat" in the Watergate investigations. What makes this book a unique souvenir of 20th century American history, though, is found in the inscription: "To Bob Maheu" (dated "8-22-81"). Robert Maheu was a well known CIA and political operative, who also served as Howard Hughes' business operations manager in Las Vegas. We've researched possible connections between Felt and Maheu. Both men began their FBI careers during WWII in the same division tracking Nazi spies on American soil. No doubt other professional connections may exist. Maheu was infamous for facilitating communications between the Mob and the CIA during its operations against Fidel Castro and other foreign targets. Peter Dale Scott's book "Oswald, Mexico, ad Deep Politics" details many of Maheu's activities in the late 1950s and 1960s, which also included dealings with the international arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. We found another intriguing possible connection between Felt and Maheu via a _Las Vegas Sun_ article (June 1, 2005), written after Felt's cover as Deep Throat was revealed. In the article, a former FBI special agent in the Las Vegas office, Dean Elson, confided to the reporter that he always knew that Felt was Deep Throat. Interestingly, "Elson was in Las Vegas from 1961 to 1968 with the FBI, and then went to work for Bob Maheu, who was chief of Las Vegas operations for billionaire Howard Hughes."
