The mission was founded in 1881 by James Hudson Taylor and grew to encompass schools for boys and girls, a playground, a hospital, and a church. Provenance: inscribed on the first blank "Miss Camp, in grateful m…emory of happy stays at Chefoo. C. Howard Bird. Jan. 1932" and signed by Mary Eva Bird (née Morris) below. The Birds (1874-1941 and 1877-1968) were Protestant missionaries who served with the China Inland Mission in several cities including Chefoo. They married in Shanghai in 1907. Loosely inserted is a flyer for the 1932 Hudson Taylor centenary celebrations in Bristol. Octavo. Half-tone photographic panorama of Chefoo, 13 similar plates, map of China. Original card wrappers, front cover lettered in gilt and with laid down illustration (after a watercolour) within gilt frame, map endpapers. Edges creased and nicked, gutter cracked in couple of places, gatherings expertly consolidated with adhesive: a very good copy.
