Contact seller5-star sellerWeiner, Marc A. Undertones of insurrection: music, politics & the social sphere in the modern German narrative. Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1993, xvi, 313pp., very good hardcover with illustrated printed covers, a few very minor light pencil lines in margins or erasures of such. Texts and contexts ; v. 6. - Early in t…he 1930s Theodor Adorno began to draw attention to the intimate ties between Germanic music and emerging dangers in Germanic culture. In this book, the author shows how music was a battleground in Germanic literature as well. Changes in musical style, the lives of composers, and different musical tastes became means of probing all sorts of cultural issues, including the nationalist confidence in Germanic supremacy. Ranging from 1900 to Doctor Faustus (1947), the author's study sets the stage by examining debates that conflated such issues as national identity, racism, populism, the role of the sexes, and xenophobia with musical texts. In the literary analyses that follow, he discusses both obvious connections between music and sociopolitical issues--Hesse's equation of jazz and insurrection in Steppenwolf--and covert ones--the suppression of music in Death in Venice and the use of politically charged musical subtexts in Werfel's Verdi and Schnitzler's Rhapsody. By uncovering the ideological agendas informing cultural practice in modernist Germany, this book calls for a reevaluation of the function of music in Germanic culture in general and in the modern German narrative in particular. - CONTENTS: Ch. 1. Music in the Modern Imagination: The Polemics of Hans Pfitzner -- Ch. 2. Music and Repression: Death in Venice -- Ch. 3. Mozart, Jazz, and the Dissolution of the Bourgeois Personality: Steppenwolf -- Ch. 4. Democracy versus Music Drama: Verdi, Palestrina, and Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man -- Ch. 5. 240 pp.; 23 x 16 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white; edition size unknown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed "We owe our idea of the contemporary exhibition to Harald Szeemann--the first of the jet-setting international curators. From 1961 to 1969, he was Curator of the Kunsthalle Bern, where in 1968 he had the foresight to…give Christo and Jeanne-Claude the opportunity to wrap the entire museum building. Szeemann''s groundbreaking 1969 exhibition When Attitudes Become Form, also at the Kunsthalle, introduced European audiences to artists like Joseph Beuys, Eva Hesse, Richard Serra and Lawrence Weiner. It also introduced the now-commonplace practice of curating an exhibition around a theme. Since Szeemann''s death in 2005, there has been research underway at his archive in Tessin, Switzerland. An invaluable resource, this volume provides access to previously unpublished plans, documents and photographs from the archive, along with important essays by Hal Foster and Jean-Marc Poinsot. There is also an informative interview with Tobia Bezzola--curator at the Kunsthauz Zurich and Szeemann''s collaborator for many years. Two of Szeemann''s most ambitious exhibitions are presented as case studies: Documenta 5 (1972) and L''Autre, the 4th Lyon Biennial (1997). A biography, an illustrated chronology of Szeemann''s exhibitions and a selection of his writings complete this exhaustive survey." -- publisher''s statement. Texts by Szeemann, Yves Aupetitallot, Mark Nash, Florence Derieux, Hal Foster, Jean-Marc Poinsot, François Aubart, Fabien Pinaroli, Balthasar Burkhard, Sadie Woods, Karin Prätorius, Urs and Rös Graf, Lucia Pesapane, Irmeline Lebeer and John Anthony Thwaites, Jean-Christophe Ammann, Bazon Brock, François Burkhardt, Johannes Cladders, Lucia Pesapane, Claes Oldenburg, Lawrence Weiner, Haeju Kim, Julija Cistiakova, Yuka Tokuyama, Thierry Prat, Thierry Raspail, Chris Burden. Copiously illustrated with images of Szeemann, exhibitions curated by Szeemann. Illustrated chronology of exhibitions curated / organized by Szeemann, selected bibliography. Very Good. Light handling wear evident. Contents clean and unmarked.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Spuren von Feuchtigkeit / Nässe; Leichte Rillen / Abschürfungen / Risse / Knicke; Gebrochener Buchrücken; Farbtonänderung. This book addresses one of the most hotly contested debates in contemporary cultural the question of how anti-Semitism figures in the operas of Richard Wagner. Until now, scholars… have generally acknowledged Wagner's anti-Semitism but have argued that it is irrelevant to the operas themselves. Marc A. Weiner challenges that traditional view by asserting that anti-Semitism is a crucial, pervasive feature in Wagner's operas.Weiner argues that the operas exemplify and contribute to a vast collection of images that are patently anti-Semitic - and that were readily recognized as such by nineteenth-century German audiences. These images were associated particularly with the body.Through a careful examination of Wagner's music, libretti, and stage directions, Weiner reconstructs iconographies of corporeal images - iconographies of the eye, voice, smell, gait, and sexuality - that were essential to the operas and were "associated with anti-Semitism and the longing for an imagined German community.".
