As a writer, Payno cultivated almost all genres: political, philological, historical essay, tax studies; stories, travel narratives, etc., although his literary titles are limited to the novel. He published El fistol del diablo, the first extensive novel to appear in Mexico after Fernández de Lizardi's. Also The man of the situation, The bandits of Río Frío. He is, without a doubt, the most important author in Mexico in the serial genre. His character as a fine observer of provincial customs was evidenced in the chronicles, which in the form of letters he addressed to his friend Fidel (Guillermo Prieto). These letters and two chronicles from Veracruz are brought together in this volume: "La Cascada de la Orduña" and "Deer hunting in Orizaba".
