A press photo showing an aerial view of the mostly-abandoned construction camp at Hanford, Washington, in 1945. Workers lived in segregated housing in Hanford while they built the Hanford Site nuclear production complex, part of the Manhattan Project. After completion of the Hanford Site, most of the construction housing was abandoned and eventually demolished, replaced by the town of Richland, where the nuclear production workers lived. As the caption puts it, the "'ghost town' has now been replaced by a modern, complete community which provides housing for the families of workers at the plant, which is now engaged in producing the 'atomic bombs.'" Plutonium from Hanford was used in the Trinity test and in the Fat Man dropped on Nagasaki. Hanford released radioactive isotopes into the Columbia River and the air and soil; once decommissioned, it left behind 53 million gallons liquid and 25 million cubic feet solid of radioactive waste. He managed the project's vast industrial, scientific, and logistical operations, coordinating work at sites such as Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Hanford, and worked closely with J. Robert Oppenheimer. A certificate issued to Edward R. Driese "for participating in work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb, thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II". It is dated 6 August 1945, the day the atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima, and has the printed signature of the Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson. Driese was a builder who worked in California; his state contractor's licence is loosely inserted in the manual, of which this is the restricted edition. A public edition was published the following year. It contains information on atomic technology, including the theory of the atom, the construction of the bomb, and the principles of atomic defence. The printed watermark on the certificate depicts a Manhattan Project Service Pin, which was issued in either bronze (as the depiction here) or silver, the latter designating service of over a year. Single sheet of thick paper stock (279 x 214 mm), watermarked with War Office crest. Manual within original morocco leatherette covers, three metal screws.
