Volume 1 : Science Aristotle's work in science has been the subject of widely different interpretations, exciting outright condemnation from some scholars and equally uncritical adulation from others. This volume questions the basis of both these attitudes. It offers a thorough re-appraisal of Aristotle's science and suggests that his achievements, substantial and many-sided as they were, were quite other than has been commonly supposed. Thus in biology his contribution is shown to have been not so much the classification of animal species as the discovery of interconnexions between their characteristics. In mechanics, he is shown to have been neither the founder of the science nor, as others have thought, a mathematical bungler who killed it in its infancy. In general, Aristotle neither ignored experiments, nor had an experimental method. Again and again, the key to his procedures is found to lie in dialectic rather than in the careful observation for which his biology is famous.
