Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Decades of field and microscope studies, and more recent quantitative geochemical analyses have resulted in a vast, and sometimes overwhelming, array of nomenclature and terminology associated with igneous rocks. This book presents a complete classification of igneous rocks based on all the recommendations of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Subcommission on the Systematics of Igneous Rocks. The glossary of igneous terms has been fully updated since the first edition and now includes 1637 entries, of which 316 are recommended by the Subcommission. Incorporating a comprehensive bibliography of source references for all the terms included in the glossary, this book is an indispensable reference guide for all geologists studying igneous rocks, either in the field or the laboratory. It presents a standardised and widely accepted naming scheme that will allow geologists to interpret terminology in the primary literature and provide formal names for rock samples based on petrographic analyses. It is also supported by a website with downloadable code for chemical classifications. This indispensable reference guide presents a complete classification of igneous rocks based on all the recommendations of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Subcommission on the Systematics of Igneous Rocks. It contains a fully updated glossary containing 1637 terms and a bibliography of source references for each entry. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Very Near Fine in a like jacket. See scans. Melbourne: Hills Memorial Volume Committee & Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1989. First Edition. Pathways In Geology: Essays in Honour of Edwin Sherbon Hills. ISBN # 0731682416. Quarto, orange illustrated jacket, white textured cloth boards imprinted in orange, 10 + 463 pp. A very, very sharp Near Fine volume, with just several small clear spots on the copyright page, not affecting text, and a small patch of dust of page fore edges; jacket is also Near Fine, bight and unclipped, with no salient issues whatever; just sprinkling of several black specs on front cover, barely visible. Please see scans. Far more than a tribute to Edwin Sherbon Hills, this extremely rare volume is replete with scholarly text and seemingly countless graphic enhancements - maps, charts, tables, photographs, perspective sketches. Primarily straight Aussie geology, but there is an engrossing and related palaeontological section as well. See scans of both contents pages for details. Apparently peerless as example of surviving available copies - we have, in fact, seen no others at all recently. A true and valued rarity. L84.

Papered boards; a fine copy with the lightly sunned dustwrapper. 'This volume brings together some 30 papers written to honour the unique contribution that the late Professor Edwin Sherbon Hills made to earth science knowledge over more than half a century. Facsimiles of six of Hills' benchmark papers are accompanied by contributions from many internationally known authors.' Professor Hills (1906-1986) carried a heavy teaching load, including palaeontology, stratigraphy, engineering geology, petrology, economic geology and physical geography [and was] awarded the David Syme prize for scientific research in 1940. Well organised and intellectually thorough, he favoured fact over theory . applications of Hills' research were extensive, particularly in economic geology and arid zone research. In the former, the mapping and survey work he began in the 1940s established interpretations that influenced subsequent mineral exploration' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').
