Original Purple Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Not Stated. No stated date c1950s. 382pp., 16 black and white illustrations and 5 maps. This is a biography of the famous missionary explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873). This biography differs from many in that it contains a somewhat detailed account of his boyhood. The book is part of publisher's 'Illustrated Pocket Classics' series, and is bound in the original purple cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the bottom of the spine and front corners. The contents are tight and clean with an interesting inscription by David Livingstone's youngest grand-daughter Ruth Macdonald (nee Wilson) on the front free endpaper. It reads "Sheila Mackenzie with best wishes from Ruth M. Macdonald", with a note below in the same hand that appears to read "St Paul says 'The love of christ constrained me - David Livingstone says 'The lover of christ compelled me'. There is a tipped in note about Ruth Wilson on the front fixed endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper is very good with shelf wear and light soiling. The spine ends and bottom corners are bumpeed and nicked and there is about 1/4" missing from the top of the spine. There are a few small tears of up to about 3/8" on the edges and the larger of these have been repaired on the reverse with tape. The dustwrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover. Inscribed by Livingstone's Gra.
