Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. 1st. Sub-titled "Stained Glass Windows in New Zealand Houses" this study was initiated at a time when including these elements of architectural design and decoration was undergoing something of a renaissance and becoming recognised as an art-form renewal. Most of the early examples the authors discovered dated back to the late 1890s, when the art-form was relatively widespread in quality homes. They adopted a chronoligical sequence of division for the book with six chapters --- the Victoria era 1891-1905, the Edwardian 1901-10, Art nouveau 1905-20, Art deco 1920-40, the pictorial tradition 1900-40 and modern revival 1970-). An opening chapter describes the authors' methods of locating examples for inclusion in the book and experiences encounterd on the trail, with a general overview of the topic. Many of these "discoveries" provided the magnigicent selection of full colour potographs that illustrate "In the Light of the Past." Outstanding coverage of a subject which attracted little in the way of published material expressly recording the NZ stained glass experience before the revival of the art-form about the 1970s. First edition from Oxford University Press, Auckland in 1983, 143 pages including epilogue, notes and acknowledgements, 124 colour photograps some double page spreads, several full page and the vast majority featuring individual example of stained glass windows. Black hard covers with gilt spine titles NF with hint wear lower edges, ink gift inscription dated 1986 on FFEP, text block otherwise NF, Colour pictorial DJ also NF. Photos (illustrator).…
