Macdonald Coleman was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan which he wrote about in Once Upon A Childhood and in Once Upon A Little Town. He taught school in various centers in Saskatchewan and was the Director of the Public Library at Red Deer, Alberta. In 1937 he left Vanguard and sailed into Moose Jaw on the Greyhound bus.
