With an etched frontispiece by Macbeth-Raeburn, and a map of Wessex to rear. Publisher's dark green cloth, Hardy's decorative monogram stamped in gilt to upper board. Gilt titles to spine. Top edge gilt, the oth…ers untrimmed. Contemporary black ink initials 'J.H. jr.' to fly-leaf. gentle repairs to split hinges, and moderate spotting to endpapers. Gently toned throughout, otherwise internally clean. Moderate general wear to cloth, and some toning and a few splash marks to spine. Good. The tragic tale, somewhat reminiscent of 'Les Miserables' (1862), of Michael Henchard, who has strength in both body and mind, but still fails to build a happy life for himself, after making a terrible mistake in his youth. First published in 1886.
