Add to basketHardcover. Condition: VERY GOOD. Facsimile reproduction of the complete Charlotte Observer coverage of the Billy Sunday's 1924 Revival. Complete in two volumes. 493 leaves in continuouse hand-pagination, printed single-sided. Folio, 44cm in red buckram with gilt stamped lettering. 'The best known and most influential evangelist of the first half of the twentieth century in the United States, Sunday was born on a farm near Ames, Iowa, in 1862. Raised in rural poverty, Sunday's father died five weeks after his birth and at age 10, his mother sent him to a soldier' orphans' home. In 1880, Sunday moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, worked odd jobs, joined the local fire brigade, and participated in its athletic events. His athletic prowess and baseball skills were noted and he was signed by A. G. Spalding, president of the Chicago White Stockings to play professional baseball. Known for his running speed, and his single-season record of ninety-five stolen bases, his career lasted from 1883 to 1891 and he played for three teams. Like other evangelists and revivalists in the United States before him such as George Whitfield, Charles Finney, and Dwight Lyman Moody, Sunday is estimated to have preached to over 100 million people between 1908 and 1920. He was the most prominent twentieth-century evangelist prior to the meteoric rise of Billy Graham after the World War II. Sunday's rhetorical skills, ability to understand and influence the common person, and theatrical flair made him a household name and popular cultural icon. His evangelistic methods and social and theological positions received criticism from liberals and conservatives denounced his advocacy of women's rights and evangelistic outreach to African Americans. An ardent prohibitionist, he is credited with helping passage of the Eighteenth Amendment. A staunch supporter of the United States during World War I, he helped raise millions of dollars for the war efforts. He epitomized conservative Protestant revivalism in the first half of the twentieth century.' (Encyclopedia of Christianity in the United States).
